September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and in honor of this month we wanted to shed some light on the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer and how routine health screenings can help with early detection. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer for men. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located in the male reproductive system above the bladder, in front of the rectum. It often has no signs, so it is important to follow the recommended testing guidelines to stay on top of your prostate health.

Signs and Symptoms

Since prostate cancer typically does not show many symptoms in the early stages, routine screening is essential for early detection. When symptoms do appear this means the cancer is progressing. Some signs include:

Frequent or Trouble Urinating
If you are a male experiencing increased urination or struggling to maintain a steady stream, these may be indicators you have prostate cancer. This happens because the prostate as it becomes enlarged with the disease and presses on the bladder causing issues.

Blood in Semen or Urine
If you experience blood in your urine or semen this can be a sign of prostate cancer or could indicate another health issue. If this happens, please contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile Dysfunction can be a symptom of prostate cancer although this does not necessarily mean you do have the disease. However, it may serve as a warning sign if the cancer affects nerve function.

Bone Pain
Pain in your hips, back or pelvic region can indicate prostate cancer.

Unexplained Weight Loss
A sign that the cancer is progressing can be unintentional weight loss. It often means the cancer has reached later stages.

These are typical symptoms of prostate cancer, but they can also be symptoms of other non-cancerous conditions. That is why frequent routine testing and screenings can help determine the cause.

How to determine if you have Prostate Cancer.

Testing is one of the best ways to detect Prostate Cancer, especially since symptoms do not often appear until later stages. Some recommended tests include:

PSA Test
The PSA test is a blood test used to screen for prostate cancer through the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate. If your levels are higher than normal, this could indicate cancer. It is recommended that men get a PSA test if you are 50 or above or are at risk or have family history.

Enhance Prostate MRI Screening
Enhanced Prostate MRI Screening is a cutting-edge tool used to detect prostate cancer and assess the health of the prostate gland. This advanced screening method combines magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide highly detailed images of the prostate, allowing for early detection and accurate assessment of abnormalities.Men with a family history of prostate cancer, individuals of African-American descent, and those with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels may benefit from this screening method. It is also typically recommended for men 45 or over in age.

Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
A doctor or provider performs a DRE, inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel the prostate for any abnormalities such as lumps or hard areas.

Biopsy
If your other tests like PSA Tests or DRE come back abnormal, your medical provider will likely encourage a prostate biopsy. We take tissue from the prostate to check for the presence of cancer cells.

Proactive Screening for Better Outcomes

While prostate cancer can be serious, early detection through regular screening provides a significantly better chance for successful treatment. Testing helps detect cancer at its earliest stages, even before symptoms appear. Whether you’re in a high-risk category or simply want to stay on top of your health, it’s essential to speak with your healthcare provider about the right healthcare plan for you.
